What to Watch This Summer
A few weeks ago, I did an issue of my weekly newsletter that focused almost entirely on shows to watch. It was so popular (I really do look at those open rates, y’all!) I decided to do another one! There are so many, many shows about badass women out right now! Here are some I think you’ll want to check out!
I’m going to start with shows that are back for a second (and in one case, third!) season. The great news? Twice as much badassness to watch!
Hacks (Season 2) - HBO
This is hands-down my absolute favorite show right now. I didn’t think I could love it more than Season 1 – but I do! In the second season, Deborah and Ava take the routine on the road to work out some new material. More time for Megan Stalter and a hilarious small role for Laurie Metcalf really add to it this season! You can watch the trailer for Season 2 here.
Only Murders in the Building (Season 2) - Hulu
Nora Ephron meets Agatha Christie as Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are back for more crime solving and podcasting! You can watch the trailer for Season 2 here.
The Flight Attendant (Season 2) - HBO
Cassie is back – and entangled in another international murder mystery. You can watch the trailer for Season 2 here.
Never Have I Ever (Season 3) - Netflix
Mindy Kaling’s teen dramady, Never Have I Ever, is back for its third season starting August 12th. A trailer for Season 3 isn’t out yet – but you can read all about the August 12th release here.
These next batch of shows dive into the lives of some badass women…
Julia - HBO
You can watch the trailer for this show about Julia Child here.
Sheryl - Showtime
You can watch the trailer for this show about musician Sheryl Crow here.
Becoming Elizabeth - STARZ
Before she was queen, she was Elizabeth. You can watch the trailer for this show about Queen Elizabeth I here.
These next two shows are thrillers based on real-life events. If you’re anything like me, you’ll watch the shows and then google to read all you can about the real events!
The Staircase - HBO
Michael Peterson, a crime novelist, is accused of bludgeoning his wife to death after she is found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home. Lots of twists and turns and secrets revealed! You can watch the trailer here.
Candy - Hulu
Candy follows the real-life story of Candy Montgomery, a housewife accused of murdering her close friend, Betty Gore, in 1980. Jessica Biel stars as Candy and Melanie Lynsky plays Gore. You can watch the trailer here.
Finally, these are just some great shows with badass women to add to your summer watch list!
Truth be Told - Apple TV
Truth Be Told is an anthology series that tackles a new criminal investigation every season. The series is about true-crime podcaster Poppy Scoville-Parnell (played by Octavia Spencer) who risks everything in her life to pursue the truth and bring justice. You can watch the trailer here.
The After Party - Apple TV
Billed as a “millennial whodunnit”, the series takes place at a high school reunion after party with each episode a different character's perspective of what happened that night. Tiffany Haddish plays the detective investigating the case. You can watch the trailer here.
I Love that for You - Showtime
Inspired by true events, this hilarious new comedy follows childhood leukemia survivor Joanna Gold (Vanessa Bayer) as she chases her lifelong dream of becoming a home shopping channel host. Molly Shannon and Jenifer Lewis also star. You can watch the trailer here.
Senior Year - Netflix
A cheerleading stunt gone wrong landed her in a 20-year coma. Now she's 37, newly awake and ready to live out her high school dream: becoming prom queen. You can watch the trailer for this Rebel Wilson show here.
